Welcome to my latest project. In my 9+ years as a product manager (PM) I've specifically focused on data platforms and products such as data lakes, business intelligence tools, data science models, and a variety of data marts. I love the product management craft in part because there's always more to learn. I've attended numerous product management courses and as an avid reader I've read many books on the subject. I value what I've learned from this content but it always seemed something was missing. Product classes or books generally assume the product is a customer facing service or physical product. I often found myself saying, "it's different with data." But why is it different? Is it because data isn't tangible like an app or packaged good? Do people just not understand data?
I think something is unique about managing data products that isn't addressed with the typical product management content. Data product management is a growing field with ever more companies hiring product managers to extract value from internally facing data products. It's high time that data PMs get some attention.
This is what I want to explore. What is a data product? What unique challenges do PMs face managing data? What tools, practices, or processes can help companies and PMs maximize the value of data and data products? How does one even value data?
Whether you're a seasoned data product manager, starting out in the field, or just interested in the topic, I want to hear from you. I'm using this page to store project artifacts and share my process. Feel free to comment, ask questions and connect. I'd love to hear from you.
